Sleep could be the next frontier of sport science, with Europe’s top-flight teams turning to experts to recharge their multimillion-pound assets and gain a competitive advantage on the field. As reported by Mark Bailey of the teams such as Manchester United, Chelsea and Real Madrid are recruiting “sleep coaches” to help their players snooze better.

It’s the most iconic cycling event on the planet. More than just a race, the Tour De France is a battle of wills and endurance that has thrown up some of the fiercest competitive rivalries in sport over the years.

This week on the SportTechie podcast with Bram Weinstein, Benoit Simeray, CEO of Consumer, Catapult Sports, joins Bram to discuss Catapult’s growth as an elite athlete technology company and their recent entry into the consumer space with PLAYERTEK.

For all the advances in training and preparation, brain performance is still an area that can leave coaches stumped. Most in sport accept that the brain can be harnessed to accelerate learning and improve performance but there is little collective understanding of how.

Technology company Gooseberry has introduced a new fitness tracker called Smart Buckle that can replace traditional clasps on even Swiss luxury watches. For those who don’t want to wear fitness bands, the stainless steel Smart Buckle is made to fit more than 500 brands of watches that feature standard 20-millimeter leather, silicon, and fabric straps.

Big data and sports analytics are changing the ways many things in sports have traditionally been done. They are allowing for new processes that have the potential to alter the way that organizations conduct their scouting. This is because data science and sports analytics are opening up new data points

Starting with the theory that readiness and recovery factors have an impact on sport-specific skill performance, Coach Matt Hauck (along with Omegawave’s Mark McLaughlin) conduct a case study using a college basketball player participating in both training and skill sessions. The athlete self-reported using surveys in Voyager AMS and Omegawave collected data.

Lorena Martin Joins Advisory Board

Lorena is Professor of Sports Performance Analytics at Northwestern University. Lorena Martin is an applied behavioral scientist, quantitative methodologist, and exercise physiologist. She specializes in the use of statistical methods in health behaviors and sports performance. Dr. Martin is an active researcher and analyst in health and exercise physiology, where she makes extensive use of both traditional explanatory methods and predictive models. She has consulted for the NFL, NBA, and the ATP organizations. An experienced professor of statistics and avid user of the R software environment, she holds a doctorate from the University of Miami and three years of postdoctoral research at UC San Diego prior to becoming faculty at Northwestern University where she currently teaches introduction to statistical analysis, biostatistics and epidemiology, and sports performance analytics. She is the author of the book, Sports Performance Measurement and Analytics: The Science of Assessing Performance, Predicting Future Outcomes, Interpreting Statistical Models, and Evaluating the Market Value of Athletes.

Len Zaichkowsky Joins Advisory Board

Dr. Zaichkowsky is a widely known sport and performance scientist whose specialty is the psychophysiology of human performance. For 37 years he was a professor at Boston University with a joint appointment in the School of Education and School of Medicine, until his retirement. From 2010 to 2012 he was Director of Sport Science for the Vancouver Canucks of the NHL where he introduced a comprehensive sport science program to the club, including the establishment of a “Mindgym”. Currently, Len is a sport science consultant for a number of sport, medical, military, and business organizations.

Professor Zaichkowsky is a past-president and fellow of the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (1997-99), a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Applied Sport Psychology, and currently section editor on psychology for the International Journal of Health & Sport Science. He is on the Scientific Advisory Board for two sport technology companies, CogniSens Athletics, Axon Sports and Co-founder of BIOCAM, L.L.C.

He has authored or edited six books with the most recent being, “Medical and Psychological Aspects of Sport & Exercise”, FIT Publishing (2002). Dr. Zaichkowsky has published over 100 papers on sport and performance psychology, sports medicine, research design, and related topics in scholarly journals or books as well as numerous magazine and newspaper columns. Additionally he has made more than 300 professional presentations world- wide and makes frequent expert commentary on television/radio (e.g.CBC, NBC, ABC, CNN,NESN, TSN, ESPN) , and in the print media such as the New York Times, Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, LA Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Edmonton Journal, Vancouver Sun, Globe & Mail, El Pais.

His current research and consulting interests are in applying technology and science to human performance, specifically (1) psychophysiological self-regulation of performance stress using biofeedback and (2) neurofeedback, understanding the neural basis of elite performance using fMRI methodology, and (3) the development of “expert/championship” performance in sport and other domains. He has consulted with the U. S., Canadian, and Australian Olympic Organizations, Duke University Department of Surgery, Stanford Surgery, and High Performance Center, U.S. Military and Special Operations, Boston University Terriers, the NBA (Boston Celtics), Major League Baseball Players Association, Boston Red Sox, NFL, NHL Players Association, New England Patriots, Calgary Flames, Sydney (Australia) Swans, Field Hockey Canada, the Spanish World Cup Soccer Team, and Real Madrid soccer club.
